Boat Safari in Rufiji River – Selous Game Reserve
boat there are two types of boat safari we offer, afternoon boat trips and full day boat safaris.

The afternoon boat trip usually leaves camp at 3pm and returns at 6pm. It is an ideal trip if you have an afternoon free and would like to enjoy the beautiful scenery of the Rufiji River with its many hippos, crocodiles and beautiful bird-life. The sunset can also be stunning from the boat- there is nothing quite like the serenity of the river while the sun dips below the horizon.

Our full day boat safari is quite a unique experience – the Selous is one of the very few game reserves in Africa where you can view game from the water and you have a much higher chance of seeing a larger variety of wildlife inside the Reserve than outside. Because the boat safari is carried out in the Game Reserve, entry fees must be paid.

Usually the boats are shared by guests unless a private trip is requested. We like to tailor our activities to your requirements, so please get in touch if you would like to discuss options.

 Rufiji River is the largest in Tanzania, draining most of the southern part of the country and navigable for about 100 km. It is formed by the convergence of two rivers; Kilombero and Luwegu. Its main tributary is the Great Ruaha River. Rufiji River flows from southwest highlands to eastern part of Tanzania entering the Indian Ocean, opposite Mafia Island. Rufiji River Delta is the natural drainage basin, containing the largest Mangrove forest in the world. It is located about 200 kilometers south of Dar-E-Salaam in the midway between Selous Game Reserve and Mafia Island Marine Park. ; the river acts as main feature in the Selous Game Reserve, which gives opportunity for River Boat safari. The area is rich in marine life that offer a healthy habitation for variety of fish and crustacean, which are supported by the deposition of mud and fresh water from the Rufiji River. Fish found here are: yellow fin, dogtooth tuna Wahoo, kingfish, Dorado, five-fingered jack, and red cod.
